Velux Roof Windows

NATURAL LIGHT - A vital element of daily life

Natural light is hugely important for us, which makes it a really important consideration in our homes.  Too little light will make a room seem small – but plenty of light makes a room feel more spacious, more welcoming and more comfortable. A frequent question  people ask is "Will a solid conservatory roof block out all the natural light?" Although, a common feature of existing conservatories is that there are plenty of windows and doors, allowing light into the room through their vertical glazed units, it could well be worth considering one or more Roof Windows to bring in that extra amount of natural light that will make all the difference to the way the room feels and can be enjoyed.

Natural daylight increases our sense of wellbeing, and using the right roof windows in the right way can provide an abundance of natural light throughout your conservatory and adjoining rooms. You can also use the interior design of your conservatory to bring in more daylight. Light-coloured walls and furniture help to reflect the natural light from your roof windows, creating a lighter, brighter living space. In a conservatory roof conversion it is recommend that your VELUX roof windows should take up an area equal to 15-20% of the room’s floor space to bring in the right amount of natural light. For instance, a conservatory with 20m2 of floor space would greatly benefit from four VELUX MK06 windows. Before embarking on your tiled conservatory roof project, it’s worth considering the placement of your roof windows, so you can maximise your daylight.

If you position your roof windows so they follow the sun’s movements, for example, then your room can enjoy sunlight throughout the day.

Working out how to maximise your daylight

The amount of natural light a vertical window brings in rapidly decreases as you move further back into a room. There’s a simple formula to work out the point the light will reach – just measure to the top of the window, and multiply this height by two.  Then, if your room's rear wall is far back from this point, you can consider different sizes and quantities of roof windows to bring more light into the room. They can let in twice as much natural light* as vertical glazing of the same size, and are ideal to install in conservatory tiled roofs with sloped ceilings.
